How it all began ...

Hari Om!

Om Namo Bhagavate Satchidanandaya!

Through the series of Living Yoga Retreats in the UK, Sri Gurudev seems to have awakened a pure river of devotion and a yearning to live together in Divine Love and Light, creating Sri Gurudev's vision of a heaven on the earth. It has awakened in many hearts a wish for our very own Ashram, here in Europe.

At the moment it seems that the Ashram would be based in the UK (where the energy and enthusiasm has arisen) and from there it would serve the entire European Sangha. It will be for us all - everyone is included.

For this to manifest, we need to all share together in its vision and planning, to make it truly ours.

Gopal (Neil) Hill has been inspired with a beautiful vision of an eco Ashram which you will see below, and he has kindly agreed to be the Project Manager. If you are interested to see our ideas for taking it forwards, our plans so far are below.

We ask you to send us your very own vision for our Ashram here in Europe - any and all ideas that come into your mind and heart - post them on this website and share them with everyone. We will collate all the ideas into one final and radiant Vision Statement. All offers of help, expertise and experience, any comments are very welcome.

So let everyone have a say, the more we share our vision, the more we will own the concept and divine energy will pour through us to bring it into being .
Let's all join together to contribute to this project and enable our Ashram to be born soon!

Jai Sri Satguru Maharajki! JAI!

Om Prem
Rev. Padma priya

WISDOM CEREMONY FOR THE ASHRAM

Ashram for Europe Project
On the weekend of 16th August, our dear Usha Piscini traveled from Italy to London and performed a special Mandala Wheel Ceremony for our Ashram Project.

The ceremony took 4 hours and is based on native American tradition combined with Raja, Jnana, Karma and Bhakti Yoga. It gave us access to much wisdom and guidance. Our deep thanks to Usha and to Sri Gurudev for all his blessings.

Here is a synopsis of the guidance that came through the ceremony – at times it was as if the Ashram itself was speaking to us.

First Vision: A golden lotus flower as tall as a tree, weeping white nectar all around – as each drop touched the ground, a L.O.T.U.S. Temple sprang up.
A weeping rose tree, overflowing with beautiful pink blossoms, almost touching the ground.
Both are symbols of Divine Love – one eastern and one western – symbolizing the coming together of east and west.

Eagle Vision: Location: south west UK. There seemed to be woodland to the NW, a hill to the NE, a river to the E and a road to the SE.

First Question: How to help motivate and inspire this yearning which is flowing through all hearts, like a flower that has bloomed simultaneously in so many hearts. How to enable each one to contribute to it in some way?

Answer: It is to be a place where everyone feels it is their Home – the people who live there will be simply taking care of the home for everyone and to welcome them when they come, so that each visit is like family Christmas (the good ones!). In order to contribute people have to know what it is going to be and that it will be something for all future generations.

Question: It has been asked why in the UK?
Answer: Europe is diverse and is now experienced in coming together in peace. The UK is a country where all nationalities are welcome. Unity in diversity. Also Sri Swami Satchidananda made the UK his last place to visit before returning to India to leave his body. It is possible the reason he chose the UK was to “seed” this Ashram for Europe as a gift to all. All the European Integral Yoga Centres are the drops of nectar from the Golden Lotus. There will be a Board of European Representatives. It will be a Home for all of Integral Yoga in Europe.

Guidance: It has to be affordable and sustainable. Its foundation is faith and charity. The Ashram will be like a flower that all the bees come to. Setting it up as a charitable foundation will enable it to prosper as a channel of Mother Lakshmi’s prosperity. Providing finance and donations and tithing and offers of services and materials and facilities in advance in full faith, will help the Ashram to be born easily, to manifest itself.
Fund-raising programmes also create streams of energy to support the Project as it prepares to come into being. People should know what the money is going to.
Creating the right spirit is a good foundation. There needs to be a clear picture of what is needed and good management.

For the Residents: The leader, staff and all residents to be good examples of clear boundaries, able to serve self and others – no examples of burnt-out exhausted people. Staff package to include at least one massage and one hot tub per week. This is joyful living. There will be a “Bank of Time” exchange system, sharing services between the whole community.

Creativity Nurturing the artists and creative people – art exhibitions, poetry workshops and sharing it in Satsang. Sharing dance – peace dances, Sufi dance, sacred dance, Bio Danza, etc. Having a choir as well as kirtan group, and musicians supported in their creativity. A theatre group – sketches and plays to start small and let everyone have a go. Keywords: fun, light and lively.

Learning from the Past Learn what was difficult in the beginning of the Ashram in the US – example, lack of privacy. This Euro Ashram envisages having “pods” or cabins for residents. Each pod would also have a guest room to take in visitors and people on residential programmes – so we all get to know each other – elderly or lonely people or people whose children have left home having possibility to host – but also possibility of private cabins or dorms. We are inviting people involved in the setting up of the US Ashram to be on our Board of Guiding Angels.

Emotional Life The founding emotion of the Ashram is peace, tranquility, serenity.
Following all the teachings of Sri Swami Satchidananda. Personal relationships to be founded on spiritual values. Fostering understanding of the benefits of committed relationship based on shared spiritual values – perhaps newspaper articles “Why are yoga boys and girls so attractive?” “Why marry a yoga girl?” Understanding they have different values, are solidly grounded and value service and faithfulness.
To cope with possible anger and conflict between residents, have a mediation facility – how do yogis resolve their conflicts? When we have the same value system, we always have one thing in common to work from – finding common ground. Not just listening, but having counsellors. Have occasional seminars about fear, anger, depression, etc. Ensure there is a very good communication system.

Human Resources Look at changing people around in their work roles to help them develop other aspects of themselves. Let work always be their play – it’s all fun. Get a balance of that in everyone’s day, in their week, in their life.

Message from the Light Of Truth Universal Shrine, An Ashram For Europe:
I am a living creature with my own life, my own timeline, my own flavour – my own life! I will be a place of peace for at least the next 7 generations. No doubt about it.

    Taking it Forwards.
    1. Sharing our Vision and asking for everyone’s input.
    2. See what comes back and integrate it into our full Vision Statement.
    3. Gopal knows someone who could find us land
    4. Gopal knows where we could source materials from for an eco-build
    5. Gopal has volunteered to advise/lead/help/ with the eco side of things and to be the Project Manager.
    1. On a practical level we need to formally raise it with everyone.
    2. Then consult and engender views on design, location, function etc
    3. Elect a group to take it forward, delegating to appropriate skills, enthusiasm etc. They would draw up a master plan, with time scales, costs, design etc
    4. Find someone to project manage with the assent of all (or at least the majority), it’s nearly impossible to do something like this without a strong, though open lead. (Already taken care of!)
    5. Lack of communication can lead to disempowerment, so at all stages everyone must be kept in touch with progress, new ideas, changes to plans etc. A good project manager should have this skill in their locker.
    6. As for funding – I think we first need a definite vision, the place where we want to be! It could have an idea of design, location (approximately), size, function.
    7. Then we need to fundraise, which can be through open donation, or targeting high net worth individuals sympathetic to our vision. For the latter I think we could approach local business people, say within the Indian community. Ask everyone to share contacts or make approach personally. One idea is to ask people like Krishna Das and other spiritual musicians to do a benefit gig or gig.
    8. The above should be enshrined in some form of business plan, and indeed the ashram would need one too for the planning stage.

    Build

Thank you for this news regarding the ashram – what a wonderful idea, and it would be wonderful to have such a place in the UK as a base for those who wish to live there, and a place of retreat and life for those more like myself who want to be more in the outer world.

I would ask you please to remember that there is a lot more to the UK than the south, I know there are a lot of members down there which is why you focus so much on that area, but something more central, with a major airport not too far away may be worth considering. Manchester makes a very good central point to the whole islands and connects wondefully with Europe, of course london has the channel tunnel as well, but then there is the problem of london and it’s costs, overpopulation etc.

This is a very exciting prospect. Please do keep me informed of its progress

    Much love and light

That is just so exciting! I am currently at Yogaville, staffing a Basic TT. My first time here as i did my Basic TT in Mexico. I have been having visions of an Ashram in Europe as i don't feel i want to live in the United States. I currently live self-sufficiently in Greece so want to live in a yoga community, but with an ecological intent, which i find is not happening here in Yogaville. And I keep being drawn to return to the UK, although after the heat and freedom of Greece, the thought is a little daunting! And then your email appears!!

I have experience of setting up centres, but not in the UK, in Greece. I bought land there 7 years ago, designed a retreat centre, had it built and ran it. It was totally self-sufficient - sun and wind powered, our own well water, etc. I have since sold it on. I have experience of running the centre - on an admin front, am a professional cook, and many other skills gleaned over a lifetime! I also have some money to invest, but not a huge amount!

anyway, i just wanted to make contact and say that it is just an answer to my request for my way forward. thank you. and look forward to hearing more.

    Om Namo Bhagavate Satchidanandaya!

This is such EXCITING news! I'm beyond thrilled to hear about this!

Do you have Gurudev's book "Heaven on Earth: My Vision of Yogaville." If not, I could send to you. There's a beautiful charter written in Gurudev's Hand from His earliest vision of Yogaville!

Also, recently the Ashram, as you may know, has been going through some restructuring and I'm attaching the mission & vision we developed. Perhaps this will be helpful.

Kindly keep me posted as I'd love to continue to help you vision this wonderful manifestation of our beloved Gurudev's Love and Light of Yoga!

    Hari Om!

Wow, fantastic! I'd love to help you out any way I can, although at the moment I'm working full time with lots of exciting prospects for me to run more special needs yoga classes.

It'd be great to have the ashram in Dorset, Hampshire or midway between these counties and Swindon, considering the amount of teachers in this region.

Also, to make the project financially viable, would the ashram need to offer teacher trainings, events, workshops etc - just like Yogaville? I love the idea of self sufficiency though and I'm sure you have thought these things through.

Look forward to seeing you soon. Maybe we could have a meeting about it?

    Love and light

Thank you for your amazing other email about the ashram. That's fantastic news that there is so much energy and enthusiasm. Definitely count me in for whatever I can do to help, whenever.

As for a vision of the ashram, I hope that my vision would be in keeping with Gurudev's, "a heaven on earth" where people can come and practice the yoga teachings!

Let me know when I can be of service. I am not sure what skills would be relevant, but I am sure that Gurudev knows exactly where to use me next.

I think it is an excellent concept, but I think it should be located in a more central location in main-land Europ. The UK is a difficult and expensive journey involving plane or boat transport. Where a central european location could be reached by public transport such as bus or train. While car travel would enable a group to travel together and share the cost.
Let me suggest Quinta de Calma as a location, it has great energy !.

  19. Padma’s Reply to Arjuna:

    Hari Om Beloved Arjuna!

How lovely to hear from you!

Well, we already do have our beautiful Quinta da Calma which is our official Integral Yoga European Teacher Training Centre and is considered to be a part of the U.S. Ashram. It is my yoga home and Divyajyoti is my Yoga Mummy - it is where I first met Sri Gurudev - it has such a big place in my life and in my heart.

However, it doesn't quite hit the spot in what these youngsters in the UK are thinking of - they want somewhere where they can all live together in the light and grace of Sri Gurudev's teachings - a living spiritual community. And they are coming up with some cutting edge ideas of an Ashram that will be completely built from new on ecological principles - leading the way and showing the world a better, greener and kinder way to build and live.

As the Euro Co-ordinator at the moment I am completely in sympathy with you on siting the new Ashram somewhere in central Europe - but it seems that God or the Universe (or whatever you like to call It!) is sending all the energy and enthusiasm to this particular group here in the UK at the moment.

I have spoken to some of the swamis at the US Ashram about this and they all hold a similar view - that it is why Sri Gurudev visited the UK for the last retreat just before he left his body. They point out that he could have chosen anywhere, but somehow he decided on the UK and they feel that is where he has left a kind of storehouse of energy which is now being kindled for this new Ashram Project.

The UK is generally pretty accessible through the cheap airlines to most European countries now - and that may be one of the reasons why he chose it. I know when I lived in Spain it was often cheaper for me to travel through London than to fly direct to another country (for instance Portugal!!).

So, all in all, I hope you can give us your support for the present location of the proposed Ashram. And definitely let me know any and all of your visions and hopes for our our Ashram - wherever it may be!

    Heart's Love,
    Om Prem

The idea is excellent to have an Integral Ashram in Europe. If Gopal has been inspired with this beautiful vision is it wonderful. It has to be somebody who takes it forward, delegating with appropriate skills. Would it be possible to have an Ashram in Quinta da Calma?

A friend and I are delegating a house project were we want to live together in about 5 years time. So I am pretty busy at the moment because it costs a lot of time and energy.

Let me know if there are some news refering the European Ashram.

    Hari Om Dearest Heart,

    Good to hear from you!

It seems that people want the possibility to be able to live together and at Quinta da Calma we can stay but not live, so it looks as though that will remain as our Euro Training Centre. Also the energy for this project is very new and a lot of young people are involved in it - their vision is for an eco Ashram completely built from new - so we'll see what comes.

For my part, the most important thing is that EVERYONE in Europe will feel that it is their home. So maybe you and your friend could even consider coming to live here!

Meanwhile, I will keep you up to date with what is happening.

    Hari Om,
I replied to this briefly before as i was out at the ashram in virginia. i am now back home in greece and would like to contribute my Vision for the ashram in europe:

To encourage a life of truth, living from the heart, and selfless service. Both for those who live at the Ashram and those who visit. to embrace and honour all faiths and nationalities and to follow and share the teachings of Swami Satchidananda. To encourage truthful speech, from the heart, and to listen to others' opinions and ways of being with respect and love.

To live as self-sufficiently as possible, through alternative energy, compost toilets, reed-bed system, and growing as much organic food as possible. to live with respect for the earth and our environment and encourage others to do so.

To provide simple accommodation for those who live in the Ashram and visitors. Simple meaning clean, warm, welcoming, but not luxurious. To build as environmentally friendly as possible, using local resources and labour where possible. To be relatively near a train station or bus stop to alleviate the need for excessive car usage. To realise the Ashram as being part of a larger community, building up good relationships with neighbours, local businesses and authorities.

with blessings for the realisation of a European Ashram!

What a delight! An I Y Eco Ashram!!
I am left breathless by the amazing wonder of Gurudev's eternal presence!

Did He indeed plant a seed through his physical presence at the last Sangha gathering? A seed, from which an Ashram was to burst forth in the U.K.? We can only speculate. Gopel however, might know in his heart-of-hearts, since he is the one bringing forth the vision.

When the 2002 I Y Euro Reunion was being planned, our intention was to help enrich the bond between all the European I Y Centers, thus the Sangha, by gathering everyone together in celebration with Gurudev. The when, where, and how of it had such an elusive nature that we conned the phrase 'subject to change' into every report and update. We were regularly reminded that ALL was subject to (His) divine intervention.
We were challenged to embrace the chaos and trust the process. And it was the process, as much as the event itself, that was the unifying factor. Consequently, many of us were left feeling that on a personal level, it was the perfect experience. As will be this new project.

Many hands make LIGHT work – is doubly true when yogis/yogins are involved! If indeed the 2002 I Y Euro Reunion played a part in the conception of this idea, then let us all rejoice in the small part we are allowed to play in Sri Gurudev’s mission, and let us play our parts in the drama with gusto – mistakes and all!

Please register my name (lorraine.rytz@bluewin.ch) for this new Light Brigade. I would love to be of service towards manifesting what so many of us will enjoy for lifetimes to come.

    Namaste, Narayani
